Didi has been poaching engineers with deep expertise in car systems from traditional automakers in China in order to build a large-scale electric vehicle division in both Beijing and Shenzhen, Chinese media Yicai reported Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter. China’s biggest ride-hailing platform is offering a salary between RMB 500,000 and RMB 800,000 ($78,000 and $125,600) per year to an auto engineer who asked not to be named, according to the report. In November 2020, Didi launched an EV model custom-made for ride-hailing services with BYD, and is reportedly planning to develop a consumer EV scheduled for delivery in mid-2023.
